The anxiety of change

Over the years, I have seen multiple changes in my life and one thing which is constant in every change that i go through is that there is some anxiety before the change happens. Also, the more important thing is that once the change is done - the anxiety vanishes away and in most cases it is replaced by a sense of pride and comfort. So despite the experience of having survived through most changes, why do we still feel it?

a. Comfort zone - Over a period, every zone that we get into becomes our comfort zone. There is always a strong bias towards the current situation and bias against change. Something which generally looks like a change for the good also invariably faces opposition of mind as there are millions of reasons why a new area of life might feel non comfortable

b. Fear of failure - We always fear that any new thing will lead us to failure and due to this fear we tend to avoid doing it. Even though, if we know that it might not be exactly very difficult and we can do it very easily

c. Negativity bias - Even though, you would have gone through 100 changes in life and only 1 was unpleasant, we tend to remember that 1 incident and forget the 99 good ones and dwell a lot into it and thus making ourselves anxious to change

d. Challenges and opportunities - Every change brings with it some challenges, we tend to over think about them prior to the change and hence feel that the challenges actually seem much bigger than they actually are

The best ways to survive through these are as follows:

a. Opportunities - Every change brings opportunities. However bad it may seem, it has an opportunity to either learn, grow, win or test yourself. Also, in most cases the changes that happen have more good than bad, and still we are anxious. Focus on the opportunities rather than the challenges.

b. Knowing the negative bias - Always know that negative bias is a mind problem and not real. We have gone through millions of changes in life and in most cases we have succeed. The past changes have made us what we are. Change is an opportunity for you to move ahead and become a better individual. You can either have a simple life and die or you can have all the adventures and excitements and varieties and then die.

c. Creating a success imagination - Always create a positive imagination of how much good things will happen once you go through the change. That will keep you motivated and focused and also ensure that the anxiety vanishes away.

d. Belief in a bigger power - Always believe that there are bigger powers at work and you are a mere manifestation of that power. Always believe that god will eventually make everything right for you. That eliminates a lot of fear.

e. Focusing on the greater good - Always focus on the benefits that you will achieve once that happens. Also, remember that had humans decided not to change, we would have still lived in the caves. Every change brings progress and every progress ensures that the future gets a better life than the past.

f. Imaginary heroes - Always think of how your imaginary heroes have handled these situations. Suppose you lose a relative then remind yourself that harry potter had no parents, or if you lose a job, remember how college dropouts created successful businesses. We admire the heroes as they went through all the hardships before making it up there. You must try and be a hero yourself - go through the pain if the need be and win in it.

g. Focus on the moment - Always remember, the mind has a weakness where it focuses a lot on smaller problems and magnifies them to make them appear much more difficult than they actually are. Also, things in the past and future always seem more frightening or happy than they actually were. Its important to understand this and simply focus on the moment so that we avoid this weakness of magnification.

Always remember, whatever the situation, whatever the change - you have it in you to be able to live through it. So embrace it, and face it when it comes - Dont think of it now and create anxiety or fear.

Trip to the land that epitomizes the word Amazement: Heaven on earth - Srinagar - Kargil - Ladakh : Pre trip!

Day 1:

Finally, the day had arrived. Finally, the moment which was awaited since months had unfolded. As it is said, that the journey is as beautiful as the final destination and I experienced that for the past one month. I, enjoyed every passing day counting down to the day of the trip and finally the excitement and enthusiasm had peaked at the right time when the final and most awaited day of the year had arrived.

I started off my morning with a nice but light breakfast and a quick shower. The cab was waiting at my doorstep and phone calls started flooding in. My companions were calling in and every voice that I heard was as excited as mine. It was clearly evident from their vocals that everyone in the trip was as excited to be a part of this amazing awaited journey as I was..! After, greeting everyone a good morning and happy journey on the phone, I finally made up to the cab, where a very friendly driver welcomed me. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder as it is said. If you are in good mood, the world around seems beautiful and so does the people in it. The same was my experience with people who met and interacted with me along the journey. Every person I met and interacted with were kind, caring and loving companions who accompanied me along the journey..!

I reached the terminal 3 of the delhi airport and stood in the queue for my check in of the flight. It was a jet airways plane. My cousin, my mama and mami had already reached the airport.

Trip to the land that epitomizes the word Amazement: Heaven on earth - Srinagar - Kargil - Ladakh : Pre trip!

Life is a wonderful journey which gets more and more exciting with every passing moment. The most fascinating aspect of it is the element of surprise, the glimpse of exuberance and the inherent zeal which manifests itself in the form of the eagerness to experience the unknown. We live 1000s of experiences through our life and rarely do we remember a few. But there are some moments which get vividly registered in our minds. Such is the case with various trips that we undertake. And this trip definitely comes in as one of the experiences which will remain in the memory card of my brain for a very long time and which epitomizes surprise, zeal and exuberance.

Though the planning for the trip started way back, the peak of the pre-trip excitement came one day before the trip i.e.. Friday , 13 Aug, 2011. Just like most Fridays, I closed my office work but this time, there was more than the routine mundane feelings of a weekend which occupied my mind. My mind had already started picturing the trip and the various elements of it. I left the office at 11PM and went home to kick start the packing of my luggage and ensuring that I was completely prepared for this trip. After, having packed my bags by 12-30 PM and ensuring that every part of my active wardrobe was in the bag, I decided to hit the sack.

But, like most trips, my mind started getting more and more excited about the trip and ensured that I do not sleep for the rest of the night despite making valiant attempts to pacify it. Many thoughts swept my mind as I laid on my bed to sleep. My mind wandered from thoughts of experiencing the natural beauty of Ladakh to enjoying the various adventure sports which were in store for us. A journey without great companions is a dull journey but this trip didn't allow any scope for that to happen as the companions that I had were probably the best I could have had. Each one of my companions were among the people I have got fond of over the past few years in my life. So the crew of 10 people was all set for the voyage.

As the thoughts of the journey and pre- trip excitement swept my mind, I managed to please the sleep gods and get 3 hours of sleep for the night after hours of humungous efforts. My mind desperately needed this relaxation as it had to garner the energy and enthusiasm for the next one week. What was to unfold after those 3 hours of sleep was probably the most exhilarating and breath taking journeys of my life...!
